'It's All About Perspective': Alex Iwobi Defends Viral Super Eagles Hotel Video

Rabat, Morocco—Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has addressed the controversy surrounding a video he posted on social media that appeared to show the team staying in substandard accommodation in Rabat, Morocco, ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff match against Gabon.

The video, which quickly went viral, sparked massive outrage among Nigerian football fans, who criticized the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for allegedly lodging the players in what many compared to a dilapidated school hostel.

Iwobi: "I Never Said One Thing"

In a follow-up video, the Fulham star clarified that his post was severely misinterpreted and denied ever making a derogatory comment about the team's lodging.

"I didn't say anything; I just showed the video," Iwobi stated. "Are you seeing life? It's all about perspective, because I snapped at the view that I have, and people are thinking these guys are ungrateful. Brother, I never said one thing, I just did one look like this, never said a word."

Iwobi further urged critics to consider the broader context, pointing out that many people in Nigeria do not even have basic amenities. "Bro, I'm comfy. I'm playing Mario Kart," he concluded, signaling his focus remains on the upcoming game.

NFF Clarifies Team's Accommodation

The controversy prompted the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to issue a clarification through the Super Eagles Media Officer, Promise Efoghe, who dismissed the claims of poor lodging.

  • Actual Hotel: Efoghe confirmed that the Super Eagles are comfortably housed at the Rive Hotel in Rabat, a modern facility that was chosen for its proximity to the team's training ground and the match venue.

  • The Misleading View: The NFF clarified that the video shared by Iwobi showed an old, rundown building that was visible from a window of the team's actual, luxurious accommodation, and was not the hotel itself.

The incident highlights the long-standing public scrutiny over the NFF's management of player welfare and logistics, but the focus for the team now shifts entirely to Thursday's must-win playoff against Gabon.
